There are three elements to take into account when you do these calculations. The upfront cost of the bulb; the cost of the electricity used to run it; and the life of the bulb. Incandescent and halogen lamps are much the cheapest to buy, but they fall down on everything else.
TP24 did its calculations based on a typical modern kitchen which would have 5 halogen lights. It compared the costs of these with the equivalent CFLs and LEDs. Its figures are based on the lights being on for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week for a year. I suspect that most of us don't have them on that much, but if you do the figures may prompt you to turn them off more!
The annual amount added to your electricity bill for running those five lamps would be £95.37 for halogen, £20.98 for CFL and £4.77 for LED. Add to that the fact that LEDs last for 20,000 hours, CFLs for 10,000 hours and halogens for just 1,000 hours and changing them rises speedily up the priority list.
The upfront costs for LEDs and CFLs are more: £9.95 for 5 halogen lamps; £24.96 for CFL and £34.92 for LED. But even at these prices, you're saving money six months after you've bought them. Click on the table above to enlarge it and see all the figures.
LEDs are increasing in performance at an incredible rate. Two years ago you could get 25-30 lumens per watt. Now they are generating between 65 and 100 lumens per watt. You may want to test one bulb to make sure you're happy with the light it gives before investing in large quantities. You can buy lamps that plug straight into the halogen fittings.
The one complication is if you have your existing halogens or incandescent bulbs on a dimmer switch. You can get dimmable LEDs, but they cost much more (between £20 and £45 each compared with £7 to £9 for standard LEDs). Alternatively you could get an electrician to change the switch to a simple on/off one.

A Buyer’s Guide to choosing the right LED bulb

If you have been a regular follower of The Sheerled blog, you will know that we are huge supporters of the LED lighting revolution.

Not only do LED lights offer up to 90% energy savings compared to traditional halogen or incandescent bulbs, they also have a vastly superior life span – lasting 10,000s of hours compared to a traditional bulb which may last only 1,000 hours.
Even comparing LED bulbs with the older style CFL low energy lighting there are clear advantages – as you flick on the light switch an LED light will instantly offer full illumination, while the CFL would still be warming up. LED lighting can also be manufactured to produce a range of different colour temperatures and quality of light (known as colour rendering).
Now while the benefits of LED lighting are now fairly well recognised, what a lot of consumers don’t understand is that LED lights vary massively in quality.
The majority of LED lighting manufactures all promise unparalleled performance, in terms of lifespan and the quality of the light the bulb produces, but they can’t all be right can they?

Heat Dissipation

One of the most telling aspects to a LED bulb when it comes to quality is how well the bulb dissipates heat.
A common misconception is that LED bulbs don’t get warm, however this just isn’t the case. They don’t get nearly as hot as incandescent bulbs, but since power goes into the LEDs, they do produce heat and this must be drawn away from the LEDs.
Unfortunately LEDs can’t radiate this heat away in the same way as an incandescent bulb – instead, the heat needs to be drawn away from the LEDs by a heat sink normally located in the bottom of the bulb. The heat sink absorbs the heat produced and then dissipates into the surrounding environment.
If the heat sink doesn’t fulfil its job correctly, the LED will overheat and most likely burn out. So a badly designed heat sink will be detrimental to the lifespan of the LED bulb, and efficient thermal management is really important to ensure that the LED bulbs last as promised!
There are lots of different designs for heat sinks, which is why the appearance of LED bulbs changes so much between brands. You may be familiar with the metal fins on some LEDs – higher end LEDs will have aluminium fins or ceramic heat sinks. The ceramic fins in many cases can be more effective than any metal heat sink, since they possess lots of tiny pores, which provide an even greater surface area to dissipate the heat from compared to metals. Ceramic heat sinks have a very low thermal capacity, but the highest surface area to maximise heat loss into the surrounding environment.
So in our experience better LED bulbs will utilise ceramics or aluminium, but this alone does not make them a market leader!

Chip Set

Whilst heat dissipation is important – the chip used to convert electricity to light is also really important.
A poor chip will generate more heat, and will therefore not last as long. Better bulbs will use chips from better manufacturers, which generate less heat and convert more energy to light – it kind of goes with out saying you get way you pay for, and this is 100% true with LED lighting, if you buy a GU10 for £3, you should probably question the quality of the chip set used.
Bridgelux for example are world renowned for producing extremely high quality chip sets having worked with the might of Toshiba’s R&D department – and these are found within the Philips Masterspot LED bulbs, which are considered some of the best LED bulbs available in the market.

Do Energy-Saving LED Lamps Save Energy?


Adds details of the researchers’ methodology and further explains the calculations used to compare the energy used by LED, compact fluorescent and incandescent bulbs.
A number of readers of my LED posts have voiced skepticism as to the total energy savings that LED lamps have promised.
There’s no question that they use a fraction of the power used by standard incandescent bulbs to produce the same amount of light and last up to 25 times as long. But would the energy needed to create an LED lamp, plus the energy needed to power it, be less than the equivalent amount for a regular light bulb?
The short answer is, yes.
In what is apparently the first “life cycle assessment” of LED lights, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University looked at the energy needed for material and parts manufacturing, product manufacturing, and use of an LED light source and compared it with that of an incandescent bulb.
Carnegie Mellon calculated the amount of energy needed to manufacture and then run a light source (bulb or bulbs) for 25,000 hours.
They assumed an LED lamp would last 25,000 hours, and that the amount of light that could be created from a single LED source would approximate that from a compact fluorescent (in reality, LEDs hold the promise of producing even more). They also assumed that it would take three compact fluorescents or 25 incandescent bulbs to produce light for 25,000 hours.
In addition, the researchers assumed that LED manufacturing plants would be able to achieve a 50 percent yield rate; in other words, half the LED light sources created would be discarded.
The results: the energy needed for one of these “functional units” ranged from 1,500 kilowatt-hours for the standard incandescent bulbs to 320 kWh for the compact fluorescents and 280 kWh for the LED light source.
If these results hold up — and H. Scott Matthews, one of the researchers and a research director of the university’s Sheerled ltd, acknowledged that the researchers could not get all the data they needed — it will be another valuable piece of information in proving the ability of LED lighting to significantly reduce the world’s power consumption.

The Dark Truth About LED Lighting



Recent reports commissioned by the UK Department of Energy and Osram Sylvania indicate that LED is slowly but surely becoming the preeminent technology in new lighting applications. This is great news for the environment, due to the efficiency of LED lighting, but there are still other factors to consider when choosing the right outdoor lighting. The brightest light for the fewest watts might help with the energy bill, but it is not necessarily the best way to help the planet.
Efficiency is a great selling point for LEDs in an increasingly environmentally-conscious world. Reducing the effects of global warming by decreasing damaging emissions from wasteful power consumption is an important part of conservation efforts. However, many people do not realize the direct, negative impact that the wrong lighting can have on their immediate surroundings. In heavily populated areas, bright lighting contributes to light pollution— that cloying orange haze that obliterates the night sky. Astronomers, in particular, are pushing to significantly reduce light produced by cities, particularly those that surround important stargazing facilities.
Light pollution also has a detrimental effect on local wildlife. In coastal areas, the bright lights of beachfront properties has been directly linked to a reduction in the number of nesting sea turtles. Not only does the excess illumination discourage pregnant sea turtles from nesting, but it also lures the hatchlings away from the their natural nautical habitat. Baby sea turtles hatch at night, and are programmed to head for the brightest point on the horizon— generally the moon hanging over the sea. On a dark beach, this is usually a reliable instinct, but glaring white light from mankind inevitably leads many hatchlings away from the water to certain death.
Further in-land, other nocturnal species feel the effects of bright lighting. Bats, which are crucial nighttime pollinators and insect population control experts, are easily disoriented by bright lights. Light pollution will drive out bat populations, which can topple entire ecosystems. While many are afraid of them, there are others who understand the importance of these flying mammals and the services they provide. In some Florida towns, where the bugs are notoriously numerous, people build gothic towers to welcome bats back to town.
The good news is there are energy efficient options for outdoor lighting that will pose no threat to species who are used to living in the dark. Amber LEDs are a cost effective way to protect natural habitats. Amber LED emits light at a frequencythat nocturnal animals cannot see. To humans, the emitted light is a deep orange color which provides plenty of illumination to see by.
Amber LED is not perfect for every outdoor lighting application—you wouldn’t want to attempt a round of tennis in a deep orange court. However, for outdoor lighting that is generally used on a regular basis, there seems to be few reasons not to choose the most energy efficient, environmentally friendly option.
